Stem-Cell Injunction to be Appealed

Today the Department of Justice announced it will appeal a District Court Judge’s preliminary injunction [.pdf] that prevents federal funding for stem-cell research. The injunction was issued yesterday and cites a violation of the Dickey-Wicker Amendment, which is a clause within a 1996 budget law that prevents federal funding for any stem-cell research in which an embryo is destroyed. The injunction supersedes Executive Order 13505 [.pdf] that President Obama signed in March of 2009 to broaden federal support for stem-cell researchers.
