Top Metro Unemployment Rates

Among the 34 largest metropolitan areas, 20 areas reported increases in unemployment, while 9 experienced decreases and 5 experienced no change in the past year. Michigan contains the top 3 areas that lead the nation in unemployment, yet these same 3 areas have also seen the highest decrease in unemployment since July 2009, as the chart below shows. Additionally, the metropolitan area with the highest rise in unemployment over the past year was in the Miami area with the rate climbing from 11.4% to 13.2%, according to data from the Labor Department [.pdf].

Michigan, California, and Florida contain almost all of the top metro areas of unemployment.
