Jobless Claims Decrease

After the number of new unemployment benefit claims climbed to 500,000 in the 2nd week of August, new claims have declined to 451,000 in the week ending September 4th – indicating the number of layoffs are slightly decreasing. Though in the past month, the number of Americans receiving unemployment benefits remains unchanged at 3.5% of the population, or 4,478,000 people, according to the Labor Department. However, 4.5% of the population received benefits in September of 2009, so the number of Americans receiving benefits in the past year has declined 1%, or 1,557,000 fewer people.
