Unemployment Claims Increase

The amount of new unemployment claims increased to 465,000 in the week ending September 18th – up from 453,000 in the previous week, according to the Labor Department. In the 2nd week of August, the number of new claims was over 500,000, but as the 2010 Census continues to wind down, the statistical changes for new unemployment claims continues to become less tumultuous, as the chart below shows. Only 9,820 temporary census employees remain on the payroll, according to the Census Bureau.

Week-to-week changes in new unemployment claims are becoming more modest.
