Even though 3 months remain in 2010, this year has already become the most fatal year of the Afghanistan War with 366 casualties – surpassing 2009 with 311 casualties [.pdf]. During September, the US forces have suffered 45 casualties in Afghanistan – about the same pace of casualties for each of the previous 3 months, according to the Department of Defense [.pdf]. June, July, and August has been the deadliest period for US forces since the Afghanistan War began with a toll of 179 casualties.
Meanwhile, in Iraq, there have been 4 casualties thus far in September. This rate is about 75% less than the August toll of 17, which was the most casualties for a month since May of 2009.
