Congress Adjourns With Spending Extensions

The House and Senate have both voted to adjourn until after the 2010 elections, but not before they also voted to provide $219 billion for the operation costs of federal agencies. Without the extension, there would not have been funding available for federal positions, such as border patrol agents and certain types of veterans, as well as the employees of federal agencies. Basically, the bill allows Congress to hit the campaign trail without worrying about federal operations. Additionally, since President Obama signed the bill before the new fiscal year began on October 1st, the $219 billion is tacked on to the record-breaking 2010 expenditures, not the new fiscal year.
