During the 2006 midterm cycle, the 1st week of October had only 6 electioneering communication filings. Comparatively in 2010, there have been 39 filings in the 1st week of October. Additionally, the sum of the 6 filings in the 1st week of October 2006 is $624,279, whereas the sum of the 39 filings in the 1st week of October 2010 is $11,512,830, according to an analysis of the FEC’s database. This is a 1,844% increase from the previous midterm cycle. Also, even if inflation is taken into account, which is 6.7% between 2006 and August 2010, the 1st week of October of the current midterm cycle is still 1,720% more than the same period of the previous midterm cycle. Without a shadow of a doubt, the Supreme Court’s ruling of Citizen’s United is altering how American democracy operates.
