Between October 1st and 17th, the US forces have suffered 34 casualties in the Afghanistan War. This rate of casualties is the same pace as the previous 4 months, which has been the deadliest 4-month span of the Afghanistan War with 222 deaths from June to September. Including the casualties in October, there have been 397 casualties in Afghanistan this year, according to an analysis of the casualty database from the Defense Department [.pdf]. This amount of casualties in a year is already much greater than any other year of the Afghanistan War. There were 311 US casualties throughout 2009 – the year with the 2nd most casualties in Afghanistan. Prior to 2009, the most casualties in Afghanistan for a single year is 155 – signaling a sharp increase of casualties over the past 2 years.
